Course Description

Contemporary Print and Craft

2021-2022

Seth Kasselman

Goal

The goal of this course is to develop fundamental skills and understanding of old world print and craft techniques through a contemporary lens.

Competencies and Objectives

Students will demonstrate competency by understanding and executing the following technique and methods: relief printing, screen printing, stencil cutting, cut paper, felt making, crochet, knitting, embroidery, hand and machine sewing, paper making, book making, mold making, dyeing, and pattern creation. Students will discuss the connection between old world techniques and contemporary art making. Students will engage in the viewing and discussion of “Craft in America”, a non-profit organization and television program dedicated to the exploration of craft in the United State and its impact on our nation’s cultural heritage. Students will create their own contemporary work. Students will also be able to critique their own work, as well as the work of their peers. This course should facilitate Print and Craft as a foundation for graphic and design endeavors on and off campus. Students will be responsible for viewing art outside of school and completing artist reviews throughout the year.

Materials

Most of the art media and tools required to complete this course in a satisfactory manner will be issued by Metro. However, students will be asked to acquire:
-Visual source materials Occasionally we will have assignments that require a student to produce materials (i.e. found objects) outside of class. If there is ever a problem in obtaining assigned materials, please speak with instructor, and arrangements will be made.

Methods and Procedures

This is first and foremost a studio art class, and therefore most of our class time is reserved for studio work. All of our assignments will be presented in a sequential manner, each lesson building upon the fundamentals acquired in the last. This year, as the Visual Arts Department we are working towards a new and streamlined way of presenting information. We will be practicing a Lecture and Response technique, in which each unit will begin with a lecture, followed by a classroom discussion, completion of homework, brainstorming, and a visual solution to the problem assigned. Each assignment in the class will be tied to an episode of PBS’s “Craft in America”. We will have a formal critique after all completed projects in which each student must participate to receive maximum points. Along with critique, there will be a written evaluation of projects completed.

Agreements

Students in this course agree to behave consistently with the policies and procedures in the Student Handbook. (These have been updated as of August 2018, so make sure you are aware of any changes.)

Students in this course agree to be respectful of one another, the instructor, their artwork, and the artwork of their peers.

Students in this course agree to keep this studio CLEAN! Just because art can get

messy, does not mean that you can leave the studio messy. This is a communal space and every student will clean it, every time. Everyday that the studio is left messy, the entire class will lose 2 classwork points (out of 10 daily points), unless the person of the mess claims responsibility and stays to clean it. That person will lose 5 points for the day, but can make them up with extra credit sketches.

***Students understand that this course outline is a guide, and can be changed at any time based on the needs of students and instructor.***
