Language Arts 7th and 8th Grade

Course Description

Language Arts follows a regular routine. Everyday, the students will do some "bell work" in which they re-write a sentence that originally has errors in it. They will then learn a new vocabulary word and it's definition and have to use it properly in a sentence. Almost every Friday, there is a quiz where I give them one of the words and they have to spell it, define it, and use it in a sentence.

The largest chunk of the class is reading a book and answering comprehension questions based on the pages they just read. Every student will have a packet given to them which has the questions on it. They will be using a separate sheet of paper to write the answers. The papers are turned in every Wednesday and given back to them the next day.

For Seventh Grade, the first semester books they will be reading this year (in order) are: Johnny Tremain; Mountain Man; and Killing Lincoln.  In the second semester they will be reading, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman; Hondo; All Quiet on the Western Front; and The Angel Experiment.  Students will also be watching the movie versions of these films while filling out compare/contrast worksheets.

For Eighth Grade, the first semester books they will be reading this year (in order) are: To Kill A Mockingbird; Hitler's Last Days; The Boy in the Striped Pajamas; The Help.  In the second semester they will be reading, Watership Down; Lord of the Flies; and The Outsiders.  Students will also be watching the movie versions of these films while filling out compare/contrast worksheets.

Also, the students will be doing some form of writing everyday. The first semester will focus on elements of writing, style, plot, sequence, and editing. The students will do short, narrative stories.  The second semester will focus on argumentative and informative essays. Shortly before AZ-Merit testing, the students will begin test prep procedures in place of the writing portion of the class.
