Algebra I (Period 2)

Course Description

The goal of this course is to provide students with the core algebra skills needed to advance to the next grade level as well as to pass the standardized test created to assess the Common Core Standards. The first semester will focus on computational fluency, number sense, variable expressions, solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations, piecewise functions, properties of exponents, and exponential functions. The second semester will focus on polynomials and factoring, quadratic functions, solving quadratic equations, introducing higher order functions, and introducing elements of statistics. Students will learn definitions and concepts and achieve mastery through rigorous practice. Students will learn how to use graphing calculators as tools to explore functions and their applications. Throughout the course, students will use algebraic methods to model real world scenarios about numerical patterns, movement, and rates of change. Students will collect their own real-world data and model it with an appropriate mathematical function.
