Description
Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. The four primary goals of psychology are to (1) describe, (2) explain, (3) predict, and (4) control or influence behavior and mental processes.
We will survey the broad landscape of psychology, beginning with the history, methods, and ethical considerations necessary for undertaking the process of science in psychology.  We will study human behavior and experience from multiple psychological perspectives. We will engage in the process of science to observe, hypothesize, experiment, discuss, and revise our understanding as new evidence comes to light.  We will practice scientific literacy, engaging with current events while using psychological analysis to make sense of the world around us. We will develop and defend arguments based on textual evidence and accumulated data. After the first quarter, students will be allowed to advocate for particular areas of study in psychology. Possible units include sensation and perception, consciousness and its variations, memory, motivation, emotion, lifespan development, stress and coping, and social psychology. Finally, we will work to develop the habits of mind and academic skills that will help students to become scientifically literate citizens and capable college students.
