Description

The 12th Grade Humanities class is designed to cover the Language Arts standards in the content of government and economics.  While studying government and economics, students will learn about the foundations of American democracy, the structure of the federal, state, and local governments. Students also learn the significant decisions that have been made by our federal courts and how those decisions affect Americans today. They continue to learn about the role of political parties in American government and the structure of the American legal system. The focus of the course shifts toward understanding key concepts in the U.S. economic system. Students learn why economic decisions are made, as well as, how economic decisions are made. The end result is students will complete the course with the full knowledge of the inner workings of the American government and economic system, leading them to become productive American citizens with the education to make effective decisions concerning their own future.

Test corrections will be allowed.  Your two scores will be averaged. All test corrections must be typed, MLA format and a hardcopy turned in by Wednesday, November 19th.  No credit will be given after that date. You may only complete test corrections if you received 16/20 points or higher on your study guide.

Directions for the test corrections are the following:

Part 1: Multiple Choice

To make up credit for this section you must write at least three sentences for each question you missed making sure you identify the correct answer and explain why your answer was incorrect.

Part 2: Short Answers

To make up credit for this section you must write a thorough answer that is at least 8 sentences in length and grammatically correct. For the question that pertains to your IRB, you must now include a quote.

In class we have discussed the process of creating the Constitution, the document itself and the ratification process. Keeping in mind the document, the grievances against the document, and its use in modern society, do you think the Constitution is still relevant, why or why not?  Answers must be written in organized and supported paragraphs (think topic sentence, example, explanation, conclusion sentence) and in 3rd person. We know this is your opinion so you do not need to state it. After posting, you must also respond to two other posts, in which you may use “I”.

"Stamp Act Congress" & "Declaration of Independence" Writing Assignment

In class we reviewed the events that lead to the Stamp Act Congress and the colonies declaring independence from the British. These two documents were created to inform the British Monarchy of what the colonists wanted or expected from the monarchs. In at least two complete paragraphs you must summarize each Declaration, compare/contrast the tones, and then choose two rights from the Stamp Act Congress document and explain how they reflect one or more of the Principles of Democracy. You will be graded based on the following rubric, and it is expected that you include at least a total of two quotes from the documents or it will not be graded.

 

You are to post your assignment on classchatter.com by MIDNIGHT on Thursday 9/4 under the Assignment Blog.  These blogs are private, other students cannot see them.

Part 1:  You are to read the scenarios and complete the chart answering the questions for each column.  On the back, you are to then identify 3 similarities and 3 differences between each of those scenarios.  After looking at the similarities and differences, you are to identify the three most critical attributes of totalitarianism and then write your own definition based off of those attributes.  (More guidance can be found in the attachment titled, "Totalitarianism Definition".
 
Part 2:  Choose one of these dictators to research online more in depth.  For your chosen dictator, you need to find an example for each of the critical attributes of totalitarianism.  You will post this on the Class Chatter website, providing link/s to your sources.  You then need to comment on two of your other classmates’ postings that chose a  different dictator than the one you posted about.
