After earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from New Mexico State University, Sonia, a native of New Mexico, decided to further her education in the arts. She was accepted into San Francisco Art Institute’s graduate program, earning her Master of Fine Arts in Painting a few years later. After graduate school, she moved from the Bay area back to her first love- the southwest desert. Sonia has taught multiple courses in visual arts at the Las Cruces Museum of Art, Mesilla Valley Hospital, after school and private art classes, as well as teaching at SFAI as a graduate assistant for undergraduate visual art students. She provides her own syllabus & timeline with each of her students, these opportunities have allowed her to teach a diverse group of adults, teens, as well as children. As a result, she has developed effective teaching techniques and instructional methods, which have allowed her to educate all styles of learners.
 
Sonia enjoys working collaboratively with fellow artists and community members, promoting the growth and fortitude of local art and artists. She was one of the founding members of the Dona Ana New Ground Artists Art Collective in Las Cruces, NM. She loves plants, gardening, all animals, especially her cat Louie, and creating and working on her own artwork.
