Goal

The goal of this course is to understand the fundamental principles of drawing and gain the confidence to use them in the pursuit of creating visual art.

Competencies and Objectives

Students will be able to demonstrate competency by understanding and executing the 5 Basics of Drawing along with the Elements and Principles of Design. Students will focus on the creation of line variation and begin to develop their own mark. Methods and techniques mastered will include: gesture, contour, value, perspective, foreshortening, and composition through a variety of materials. Students will be introduced to drawing and art vocabulary and will be responsible for knowing, defining, and utilizing new vocabulary in the classroom. Students will begin to understand the history of drawing and its impact on society through a series of slide presentations and lecturers. Students will discover Contemporary Drawers, and how their understanding of drawing has changed the modern art world. Students will also be able to critique their own work, as well as the work of their peers. This course should facilitate drawing as a foundation for all other art making endeavors. Students will be responsible for viewing art outside of school and completing artist reviews throughout the year.

Prerequisite

Materials

Most of the art media and tools required to complete this course in a satisfactory manner will be issued by Metro. However, students will be asked to acquire:

-Sketch book

-Visual source materials; occasionally we will have assignments that require a student to produce materials (i.e. found objects) outside of class. If there is ever a problem in obtaining assigned materials, please speak with instructor, and arrangements will be made.

Methods and Procedures

This is first and foremost a studio art class, and therefore most of our class time is reserved for studio work. All of our assignments will be presented in a sequential manner, each lesson building upon the fundamentals acquired in the last. This year, as the Visual Arts Department we

are working towards a new and streamlined way of presenting information. We will be practicing a Lecture and Response technique, in which each unit will begin with a lecture, followed by a classroom discussion, completion of homework, brainstorming, and a visual solution to the problem assigned. We will have a formal critique after all completed projects in which each student must participate to receive maximum points. Along with critique, there will be a written evaluation of projects completed.

Students in this course agree to behave consistently with the policies and procedures in the Student Handbook. (These have been updated as of August 2018, so make sure you are aware of any changes.)

Students in this course agree to be respectful of one another, the instructor, their artwork, and the artwork of their peers.

Students in this course agree to keep this studio CLEAN! Just because art can get

messy, does not mean that you can leave the studio messy. This is a communal space and every student will clean it, every time. Everyday that the studio is left messy, the entire class will lose 2 classwork points (out of 10 daily points), unless the person of the mess claims responsibility and stays to clean it. That person will lose 5 points for the day.

Evaluation

Quarterly Grade includes the following:

10 pts. every day for CLASSWORK (your participation in class, cleanliness of your workspace, completion of the daily required tasks.) **

10 pts. for every regular Homework Assignment (this does not include formal papers or artist reviews)

175 pts. for every final Assignment

-100 pts. for the artwork

-25 pts. for written evaluation

-50 pts for participation in Oral critique

Semester Grade:

-45% First Quarter Grade

-45% Second Quarter Grade

-10% Final Exam

** If you miss a day of class excused or unexcused you will receive 0

(ZERO) points for your classwork for that day. You must come to office hours and discuss making those points up with me, either by completing extra credit, or by making up missed work during office hours. No unexcused absence can be made up for credit.

EXTRA CREDIT: On a case-by-case basis, you may complete an hour long drawing and receive up to 10 extra credit points. (These points will only be rewarded if you are missing points, they will not be given to students who just want extra credit.)

Grades are as follows:

A: 90 - 100 (A- 90 - 93, A 94 - 97, A+ 98 - 100)

B: 80-89

C: 70-79

D: 60-69

F: 55
