Course Description
This Art History course does not only focus on the idea of visual art and finding its context in a historical setting. As art is more than visual, there will also be introduced dance, music, theater, literature, and film, ranging as far back as the time of the Renaissance to today. In this course, we will be focused on the idea of “lisztomania,” which will be discussed heavily in class. In a sense, what does it mean for a piece of art to be popular? What is cult popularity, and why might art become revered by the masses? Why might certain artists become popular? Is art a commodity or commerce, and how has art become this way? By the end of the year, each student will have their own definition of art, as well as a timeline of what art matters to them.
